The history of Greater New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church (1925-1999) has been placed on a computer disc and will be placed in the historic archives of the church. It was on Mt. Moriah that Abraham offered Isaac, his only son, as a sacrifice. However, God provided Himself a sacrifice and Isaac's life was spared. Moriah means Jehovah, the Lord will provide .In 1941, the church purchased the building at our present location, 586 Owens and became known as the Greater New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. On July 11, 1965, under the leadership of The Reverend Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks, a $300,000.00 edifice was erected. The membership continued to grow. The building was expanded and was dedicated in 1981.In 1995, the Reverend Kenneth James Flowers became the Pastor of Greater New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, and has served faithfully and diligently. Under his pastorate, the church continues to be a beacon in the community as well as a pacesetter in building bridges interracially, interdenominationally, and with other faith-based groups. The church has presently embraced a multi-million-dollar expansion program, which will expand the current facilities to more adequately accommodate the needs of the membership as well as the community. Also, under his Pastorate, Greater New Mt. Moriah has seen many firsts Annual Church Retreat; Mt. Moriah Community Development Corporation established; several grants have been secured for various outreach ministries; the Evangelism Ministry; Women Ministers have been licensed and ordained, (The Reverend Betty Pulliam being the first female to be licensed.).In 2001, under Pastor Flowers leadership, the Reverend Sandra Kay Gordon came on staff as the first female to serve as Assistant-to-the-Pastor. God continues to bless Greater New Mt. Moriah with new beginnings . 21 members were asked to serve on the Mother's Board Ministry; members from the Senior Choir, Inspirational Choir and Voices of Moriah Choir merged to form the Senior Inspirational Voices and the Young Adult Choir was formed in October 2002; the Tutorial Program to help our youth with their academics began meeting every Saturday; and our Liturgical Dance Ministry was added as one of the new ministries here at Greater New Mt. Moriah.Greater New Mt. Moriah gave in record numbers during the Christmas season, providing food and clothing for the needy and gifts to children of incarcerated parents (Angel Tree Project, an extension of our Prison Ministry). We also held our first Blood Drive for the Red Cross right here at Greater New Mt. Moriah.Yet, more blessings are still in store for Greater New Mt. Moriah. In 2003, the Mount Moriah Community Development Corporation received its 501c.3 status, which will enable us to seek grants and be able to provide assistance to members of the community. There future plans to build nine-twelve 2-3 Bedroom Townhouses in the neighborhood. We praise God for all that is going on here at Greater New Mt. Moriah!!!It is the utmost concern and priority of Pastor Flowers that the church be the church and do the work of the church, and God being our Helper, we can Together We Can !!!!!!
